This is an original 1883 black and white heliogravure of decorative elements applied to the Japanese katana (Koshirae), or samurai sword. The larger pieces are decorative tsuba, or hand guards and are made of standard iron. The smaller rectangular elements are called fuchi and would be affixed below the tsuba as a collar for the sword's handle. At the top is a menuki representing seven sages in a bamboo thicket. This piece would be affixed to the hilt of the sword underneath the ito, or the braided portion of the handle, but above the same (ray skin) that would make up the bottom layer of the hilt. These pieces were made of two differen alloys unique to Japan called shakudo and shibuichi.
