This is an original 1894 black and white halftone print of a young samurai in Tokyo, Japan during the Meiji Restoration period. While the caption read "The Fighting Class," in all reality, at this point, the samurai class, who was equivalent to nobility, would not have been seen carrying swords in full regalia. It is likely that this image was posed specifically for the visiting Westerners.
